Heads up!

I know it has been a while since my last blog entry but hey as I said the last time life of a public relations student is hard, I've been busy with assignments most of them due this week. I was glad to find out I'm not the only one who stumbled into public relations and found my passion, anyway bumped into an old friend of mine Thandeka recently, hadn't seen my buddy in ages, the last time I saw her was in 2010 when she passed her matric. I can still remember the excitement on her face, a good day indeed. So we start catching up and she tells me she is now doing her 3rd year public relations at the Durban University of Technology, how time flies. she is now doing her in-service training(internship) there at the department of education. And went on telling me about how challenging it is as people she works with most of the time are students doing their B.ED, and they somehow take advantage as she is the youngest and her input is not always considered rigid by he older colleuges, which i guessed are challenges one had to face and be prepared for,  but on the plus side she told me how much she is enjoying the liaison with the various departments and also marketing the department she is working for. Her advice to fellow students, is that when you are opting for public relations as a career:

• One should be able to address people;
• Persuade people into believing on what you are communicating to them; and
• Most importantly networking with the right people.

She added that finding in-service training requires

• One to be very active since there are a lot of university students looking for he same job;
• Must be able o market themselves; and
• Submit a CV that's up to standard. 

These are very important factors to keep in mind as it is not always about the marks you have obtained but what you have learnt throughout, how you where involved practically, and how you apply what you have learned with yourself first. And I for one totally agree, we must each learn from each other and my friend has sure given me a heads up. At least I now have an idea of whats required of me as as pr student and how to go about looking for my in-sevirce training.
